Ayurvedic Physiotherapy and Yoga

By Dr. Mukesh Kumar Verma, Edited by Jeffrey Coleman

Ayurvedic Physiotherapy and Yoga represent a holistic approach to healing and rehabilitation, combining the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda with modern physiotherapeutic principles and the therapeutic benefits of Yoga. Ayurvedic physiotherapy uses herbal oils, therapeutic massages, heat treatments, and detoxification therapies (such as Panchakarma) to manage pain, improve mobility, and restore musculoskeletal function. These treatments are tailored to an individual's dosha constitution (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) and aim to correct imbalances that cause disease or discomfort. Yoga, as a complementary therapy, enhances flexibility, strengthens muscles, and promotes mental well-being through a combination of asanas (postures), pranayama (breathing techniques), and dhyana (meditation). Therapeutic yoga is widely used for managing chronic conditions like back pain, arthritis, stroke recovery, and stress-related disorders. Unlike conventional physiotherapy, this integrative model focuses not just on physical recovery but also on internal harmony, stress reduction, and long-term wellness. Together, Ayurvedic physiotherapy and yoga offer a patient-centered, non-invasive, and sustainable model of care. They are particularly effective in rehabilitation, preventive health, and lifestyle management. Their growing popularity reflects a shift toward natural, body-friendly healing systems that address both the symptoms and root causes of illness. This book explores the integration of Ayurvedic physiotherapy and yoga for holistic healing, rehabilitation, and wellness.
