Mineral nutrition of plants refers to the process by which plants absorb essential mineral elements from the soil to support their growth, development, and metabolic functions. These mineral elements are broadly classified into macronutrients and micronutrients based on the amount required by the plant. Macronutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and sulfur are needed in larger quantities, whereas micronutrients such as iron, manganese, zinc, copper, molybdenum, boron, chlorine, and nickel are needed in trace amounts. Each mineral has specific roles: nitrogen is crucial for amino acids and proteins; phosphorus is vital for energy transfer (ATP) and nucleic acids; potassium regulates stomatal function and enzyme activation. Calcium strengthens cell walls, magnesium is central in chlorophyll, and sulfur is important for certain amino acids. Micronutrients often act as enzyme cofactors or are involved in redox reactions. Plants typically absorb these minerals in ionic form (e.g., NO??, NH??, K?, Ca²?) through their root systems. Deficiency of any essential nutrient leads to characteristic symptoms like chlorosis (yellowing), necrosis (death of tissue), stunted growth, or poor yield. Understanding mineral nutrition is critical for sustainable agriculture, ensuring proper fertilization, maintaining soil health, and maximizing crop productivity while minimizing environmental impacts. He is actively involved in research on the microbial load, nutritional value, and antioxidant properties of Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) seed. Dr. Rahul Kumar is associated with Amity Institute of Biotechnology, Amity University Jharkhand as an Assistant Professor. He is a famous professor, researcher, and scientist in the field of Biotechnology.
