Physical Chemistry: Thermodynamics, Statistical Mechanics, and Kinetics

By Dr. Teena, Edited by Leonard Bond

Physical Chemistry: Thermodynamics, Statistical Mechanics, and Kinetics is a comprehensive textbook that delves into the core principles of physical chemistry, focusing on the three central pillars: thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, and chemical kinetics. Designed for students and professionals in chemistry and related fields, this book serves as an essential resource for understanding the theoretical framework and practical applications of these key areas. The book begins by exploring thermodynamics, covering fundamental concepts like energy, entropy, enthalpy, and the laws that govern energy transformations in chemical processes. The text then advances into statistical mechanics, offering a molecular perspective on thermodynamic behavior, bridging the microscopic properties of molecules with macroscopic thermodynamic quantities. This approach allows for a deeper understanding of the physical nature of matter. The final section addresses chemical kinetics, explaining the rates of chemical reactions and the factors influencing reaction speed. It presents essential concepts such as reaction mechanisms, rate laws, and the Arrhenius equation, helping readers grasp how chemical reactions occur over time. With clear explanations, real-world examples, and mathematical rigor, this book equips readers with a deep understanding of the essential concepts in physical chemistry, making it a valuable reference for both academic study and practical applications in various scientific disciplines. Contents: 1. Introduction, 2. Heat Transfer and Fundamentals of Thermodynamics, 3. Chemical Kinetics, 4. Enthalpy and Entropy Changes in Thermodynamic Processes, 5. Boltzmann’s Work in Statistical Physics, 6. Chemical Equilibrium: Concepts and Thermodynamic Analysis, 7. Chemical Reaction Rates and Kinetic Analysis, 8. Statistical Thermodynamics, 9. Principles of Classical Statistical Mechanics.
